Albuquerque – International Balloon Fiesta as main attraction

Albuquerque has the distinction of being the largest city in New Mexico. It is the county seat of Bernalillo County. Albuquerque is located on the upper Rio Grande.

Albuquerque acts as the commercial, industrial and transportation center for an area rich in timber, livestock and farm area. In the city exists many lumber mills, food-processing plants and also other varied industries. The city is also an important center for health and medical services in the region. The economy depends on government agencies, nuclear research, banking and tourism.

Albuquerque’s history has a Spanish color to it. Spanish settlers arrived as early as in the mid sixteen hundreds but were repelled in the Pueblo revolt of sixteen hundred and eighty. The old town was founded in seventeen hundred and six and was named for the viceroy of New Spain, the duke of Albuquerque. After the building of Santa Fe Railroad, a new town was laid out in eighteen hundred and eighty. This new endeavor soon enveloped the Spanish old town and the mission church of San Felipe de Neri – both surviving even today serving as tourist attractions.

To the south of the city are situated Kirtland Air Force Base and Iselta pueblo. Kirtland Air Force Base is a special weapons center and Iselta pueblo homes a casino. Located at Kirtland is Sandia National Laboratories. This was established in nineteen hundred and forty nine as a United States Department of Energy installation to carry out nuclear research and weapons development. It is now a center for electronic and industrial research.

Albuquerque is well known health resort with many hospitals. It is the seat of the University of New Mexico and the University of Albuquerque. Albuquerque acts as the headquarters for Cibola National Forest. Two of the important attractions in and around city are the Church of San Felipe de Neri, which was established in seventeen hundred and six and the Old Town plaza. There are a number of museums in the city including the natural history and atomic museums. Then there are the Sandia Mountains, with caves containing remains of some of the earliest inhabitants in the hemisphere.  Petroglyph National Monument is another attraction. There are many pueblos which add to the flavor of Albuquerque. Situated to the north of the city is Coronado State Monument, which is an excavated pueblo near which Coronado camped in fifteen hundred and forty one. One of the important events of Albuquerque is the popular annual hot air balloon festival. There is also a ballooning museum in Albuquerque.
