Long Beach is the seventh largest city in the United States State of California. To the south of Los Angeles, in Los Angeles County, Long Beach is situated on San Pedro Bay. In eighteen hundred and eighty one, the town was laid out and settled by developer W.E Willmore. He built the site as a seaside resort community called Willmore City and sold a lot. For its eight and a half mile beach, it was renamed Long Beach in eighteen hundred and eighty four. In eighteen hundred eighty eight, the city was incorporated. In eighteen hundred and ninety seven, it was reincorporated.

Long Beach is also a year round resort acclaimed for its long and wide beaches and active marina. The city homes a large oil industry. Oil was discovered here in nineteen hundred and twenty one. It is found both underground and offshore. Included among its manufactures are aircraft, automobile parts, electronic and audiovisual equipment and home furnishings. Two factors that lend support to Long Beach’s growth are development of high technology and aerospace industries in the area and immigration. Two of the largest immigrant groups are Hispanic and Cambodian.
California State University Long Beach is situated in the city.

Important to the economy is tourism. The RMS Queen Mary, The Aquarium of the Pacific, whale watching tours and water sports are the major attractions. Other points of interest include an adobe ranch house, which is now a museum; four artificial oil islands in the harbour, a museum, hotel and tourist center.

There are websites which act as resources for information about whale watching in and around Long Beach year round. Due to emergence of blue whales summer months is a busy season for whale watching.
