Atlanta has the distinction of being the largest city of the United States state of Georgia. It is also the capital of Georgia. Fulton County has Atlanta as its county seat. Atlanta is located to the northwest part of Georgia. It is situated at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains adjacent to the Chattahoochee River. Hardy Ivy, who built a cabin in the area in eighteen hundred and thirty three, was the first European Settler. In eighteen hundred and thirty seven, the town was founded as terminus for the Georgia railroad line otherwise known as Western and Atlantic Railroad. It served as the end of the railroad line. Later it was incorporated in eighteen hundred and forty three, in honor of ex-governor Lumpkin’s daughter Martha, as Marthasville. In eighteen hundred and forty five, it was renamed Atlanta and in eighteen hundred and forty seven, incorporated as a city. In eighteen hundred and sixty eight, the city became the capital of Georgia.

In November eighteen hundred and sixty four, during the Civil War, the city was occupied by General William T. Sherman’s troops. Then, the city was burned and almost completely destroyed. After the war, the city was rebuilt and due to the expansion of the railroads in the southwest, the city grew rapidly. Today, Atlanta is the major commercial and transportation hub of the southeast United States. Its international airport, the Hartsfield-Jackson is one of the busiest in the world. The sectors of service, communications, retail trade, manufacturing, finance and insurance lead the city’s economy. Convention business is also important with many large hotels. Textiles, furniture, food and beverages, telecommunications hardware, steel, paper, and chemicals are included in manufactures.
Automobile and aircraft assembly plants, insurance companies and printing and publishing houses also add to the list of businesses. Atlanta is also a major television broadcasting center. A lot of corporations are based in Atlanta. Notable of them is Coca-Cola, which was founded here in eighteen hundred and ninety two. Atlanta was the site of the Summer Olympic Games of nineteen hundred and ninety six.
Important attractions are Capitol, which houses the state library; the city hall; the Woodruff Arts Center, which is home of the High Museum of Art and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra; the Fernbank Museum of Natural History; the state archives building and Oakland Cemetery, which contains the Civil War dead.
