Austin – Known as Waterloo

Austin has the distinction of being the fourth largest city in the United States state of Texas. It is also the state capital of Texas. Travis County has Austin as its county seat. Austin is situated on the Colorado River, in the south-central part of the state. In eighteen hundred and thirty eight, the site was called Waterloo. It was incorporated as a city and chosen as the capital of the independent Republic of Texas, in eighteen hundred and thirty nine. It was in the honor of Stephen F. Austin that Waterloo was renamed Austin. He was the founder of the Texas Republic. In eighteen hundred and seventy, Austin became the permanent capital of the state of Texas.

Austin is an oft visited spot by tourists. Catering to them, many bus companies operate in Austin. They offer services of charter bus, coach bus, limo bus, party bus etc. to the customers. After the Civil war, several developments spurred the growth of Austin. Some of them are the reaching of railroads to the city in eighteen hundred and seventies, the important Chisholm Cattle trail crossing the city and the fact that it became the seat of the state university in eighteen hundred and eighty three.

Austin has a commercial sector which is growing and a diversified manufacturing sector. The civilian government is important to the economy as it employs twenty percent of the labor force. Being home to the University Of Texas, Austin is a major center for research and development. It is also nationally recognized as a high technology center. Austin acts as the commercial heart of a large ranching, poultry, dairy, cotton and grain producing area. It is also a major convention city. Besides that, it is an educational center. In Austin are situated the main campus of the University of Texas, Saint Edward’s University and Huston- Tillotson University. The area is now a leading computer hardware and software producer. Jewelry, medical equipment, consumer goods, electronics and wood products make the other manufactures. Also important are defense industries.

Some of the major visitor attractions of Austin include the Austin Museum of Art, the Lyndon B. Johnson Library, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and the Austin Zoo.
The most prominent of many state buildings is the massive capitol which is set on a hill. This was completed in eighteen hundred and eighty eight. The governor’s mansion, the old French embassy and the house in which O. Henry lived are in Austin. Austin has become a country and popular music mecca and a film industry center in recent decades.
