Jacksonville is the largest city in the United States state of Florida. It is located in the northeast corner of Florida in Duval County, near to the Atlantic Ocean, on the banks of the Saint Johns River. Taking into account northeast Florida and southeast Georgia, it is the largest metropolitan area. By the Saint Johns River were attracted French, Spanish and English explorers and colonists to the area, starting in the sixteenth century. In eighteen hundred and sixteen, the site was settled by Lewis Hogans. In eighteen hundred and twenty two, the city was laid out. It was named after General Andrew Jackson, who was the first military governor of Florida. In eighteen hundred and thirty two, Jacksonville was incorporated as a city. Union forces, who occupied Jacksonville four times, destroyed much of the city, during the Civil War. The city was rebuilt. By eighteen hundred and eighties, the city quickly became the transportation hub and leading industrial city in Florida, following the development of its harbour and the railroads. Governments of Jacksonville and the county were consolidated in nineteen hundred and sixty eight.
