It was in nineteen hundred and sixty that Kaiser Corporation erected its headquarters at the former site of Holy Names University, at the corner of twentieth and Harrison Streets. The Black Panther Party was founded by Oakland City College, which was later known as Merritt College, students Huey Newton and Bobby Seale.
Oakland is on the east side of San Francisco Bay. The total area of the city is seventy eight square miles and highest point is near Grizzly Peak Boulevard, east of Berkeley which stands just over one thousand seven hundred and sixty feet above sea level. Although Oakland has nineteen miles of shoreline, Radio Beach is the only beach in Oakland.
Oaklanders refer to their city’s terrain as “the flatlands” and “the hills”. Although recent waves of gentrification have corrected it, the division was emblematic of Oakland’s deep economic divide with “the hills” homing more affluent communities. About two-thirds of Oakland lies in the flat plains of the East Bay, with one third rising into the foothills and hills of the East Bay range.
