Baltimore – An independent city

Baltimore has the distinction of being the largest city in United States state of Maryland. Baltimore is situated on the Patapsco River estuary which is an arm of Chesapeake Bay. It is located in the northern part of the state. As the city is independent, it does not fall within any county.  In the early seventeenth century, the site was settled. In seventeen hundred and twenty nine, it was founded as a town. The town was named after Lord Baltimore, who was the founder of Maryland. In seventeen hundred and ninety seven, it was incorporated as a city. It is blessed with an excellent harbor and since the eighteenth century, Baltimore has been a principal port. Baltimore was among the pioneer shipbuilding centers and used extensively in world trade was the Baltimore clipper.

Enticed by its many attractions, visitors almost horde to Baltimore. Many bus companies operate in Baltimore catering to these segments. The nation’s wars have greatly affected the city of Baltimore. British bombarded nearby Fort McHenry, during the war of eighteen hundred and twelve. This inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star-Spangled Banner. Throughout the Civil War, Baltimore was occupied by Union troops although Maryland never seceded from the union. During the World Wars, Baltimore was also an important shipbuilding and supply center.

Baltimore is a commercial and industrial center and a major railhead. It is also a seaport with extensive anchorages and dock and storage facilities. Exported from here are coal, grain and iron, steel and copper products. Shipbuilding, sugar and food processing, oil refining, biotechnology, and the manufacture of chemicals, steel, copper, clothing, and aerospace equipment are among Baltimore’s leading industries. The existence of strong financial, legal and non-profit service industries makes Baltimore’s economy very diverse. Through the two highly acclaimed medical institutions of John Hopkins Hospital and University of Maryland Hospital, the city also leads in scientific research and development. Tourism sector also plays an important role in Baltimore’s economy. The National Aquarium, Harborplace, the Maryland Science Center, the Babe Ruth Museum, Fort McHenry National Monument, and Pimlico Race Course, site of the Preakness form the major attractions.

Baltimore is a prominent cultural and educational center. Baltimore is the seat of The John Hopkins University which homes a famous medical center. In Baltimore are also located the University of Baltimore, Morgan State University, Loyola College, The College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Coppin State College and the University of Maryland, Baltimore. University of Maryland homes schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, law, and social work.
