Tulsa is split by the prominent Arkansas River, which flows in a wide, sandy bottomed channel. Its flow through the Tulsa area is controlled by upstream flood control reservoirs. Its width and depth can vary widely throughout the year, such as during periods of high rainfall or severe drought. Tucson was captured by the Mormon Battalion during the Mexican-American War but later returned to Mexican control. Tucson was not included in the Mexican Cession. It was following the Gadsden Purchase in eighteen hundred and fifty three that Tucson became a part of the United States of America, although the American military did not formally take over control of the community until March of eighteen hundred and fifty six. In eighteen hundred and fifty seven Tucson became a stage station on the San Antonio- San Diego Mail Line and in eighteen hundred and fifty eight became third division headquarters of the Butterfield Overland Mail until the line shut down in March of eighteen hundred and sixty one.

In eighteen hundred and eighty five, the University of Arizona was founded as a land grant college on over grazed ranch land between Tucson and Fort Lowell. Seattle is itself hill, but not in a uniform way. Like Rome, the city is said to lie on seven hills. Sacramento has a story of Chinese resilience to say and its Chinatown stands testimony to this. Throughout the early eighteen hundred and forties and fifties, China was at war with Great Britain and France in the First and Second Opium Wars. The wars, along with endemic poverty in China, made many Chinese immigrants herd to America. Many first came to San Francisco, which was then the largest city in California, which was known as “Dai Fow”, meaning the big city and some came eventually to Sacramento, then the second largest city in California and known as “Yee Fow”, meaning Second City. When, on April nineteenth of nineteen hundred and ninety five, Timothy McVeigh set off a bomb in front of the Murrah building, residents of Oklahoma City suffered substantial losses. “The City of Roses” is the most common nickname for Portland. In two thousand and three, this became the city’s official nickname.
