In eighteen hundred and sixty nine, Oakland became the western terminus of the Central Pacific Railroad. In eighteen hundred and seventy three, it became the county seat of Alameda County. The city assumed its present size after additional territory was annexed to Oakland in the latter part of the nineteenth century and also in nineteen hundred and ten. The city’s growth was even furthered, with the permanent settling of thousands of people who fled to Oakland in the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake in nineteen hundred and six. Another factor that propelled the economic development of Oakland was the opening of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in nineteen hundred and thirty six.

Mesa is the third largest city in the United States state of Arizona. Mesa is situated in Maricopa County to the south central portion of Arizona. It sits atop a plateau overlooking the Valley of the Sun. From the Spanish word for ‘tabletop”, the city gets its name. The area had been inhabited for centuries by native peoples, prior to the arrival of Europeans. They included the Hohokam and later the Pima. An extensive system of irrigation canals was developed by the Hohokam culture. Still used today are some of them. The area was first controlled by Spain and then by Mexico. Following the Mexican War of the period eighteen hundred and forty six to forty eight, the region was ceded to the United States. In eighteen hundred and seventy eight, Mormon settlers arrived on the site. They used the old irrigation canals for farming in the Salt River valley. In eighteen hundred and eighty three, Mesa was incorporated as a town. Its incorporation as a city happened in nineteen hundred and thirty.

Memphis is the largest city in the United States state of Tennessee. Shelby County has Memphis as its county seat. On the Mississippi River, adjacent to the borders of Arkansas and Mississippi, Memphis is located in the southwest corner of Tennessee. Chickasaw Indians were the first settlers of Memphis. On the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, they had a village named Chisca. It is said that in fifteen hundred and forty one, Hernando de Soto, had his first glimpse of the Mississippi from the site of Memphis. Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette, in the next century, stopped there to trade with the Indians. In sixteen hundred and eighty two, the French explorer Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle, tried to claim the area for France. He built Fort Prudhomme on the site. Chickasaw Indians ceded the area to the United States in eighteen hundred and eighteen. The credit of officially establishing Memphis goes to three enterprising businessmen from Nashville – James Winchester, John Overton and Andrew Jackson, who was to be the future president. Because of the location of Memphis on the Nile like Mississippi River, Jackson named it after the ancient Egyptian city. In eighteen hundred and twenty six, Memphis was incorporated as a city. It went on to become an important Mississippi River port.

Louisville is the largest city in the United States state of Kentucky. In two thousand and three, the city merged with Jefferson County. At the Kentucky-Indiana border, Louisville is situated at the Falls of the Ohio. Within the current boundaries of Louisville Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clark and his troops established Fort Nelson. In the next year, the town was named for France’s King Louis Sixteenth, who supported the colonists in the Revolutionary War. The city gained both military and economic importance because of its location at the Ohio River’s falls. It had become a major river port by the early nineteenth century. Its economic growth and cultural development were further stimulated by the completion of the Portland Canal around the falls in eighteen hundred and thirty.

Louisville, Kentucky

Three proposals to create a consolidated local government for the entire county were rejected by Jefferson County voters in the period between nineteen hundred and fifty six and ninety hundred and eighty four. In two thousand, they finally approved a merger between Jefferson County and the City of Louisville, which was until then the county seat. On January sixth of two thousand and three was formed the new Louisville-Jefferson County Metro Government.

Los Angeles is the largest city in the United States state of California. It is also the second largest urban area in the United States of America. On the Pacific Ocean, it is situated in the southern part of California. Los Angeles is the county seat of Los Angeles County. Geographically, from mountains to sea, the city extends more than forty miles. Cutting across the center of the city are two mountain ranges, namely Santa Monica and Verdugo. In seventeen hundred and sixty nine, the Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola visited the site. The Mexican provincial governor, Filipe de Neve, on fourth of September of seventeen hundred and eighty one, founded “El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Angeles”. The name meant “The Village of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels.” The pueblo went on to become the capital of Mexican province, Alta California. At the time of the American occupation in eighteen hundred and forty seven, it was the last place to surrender to the United States. In eighteen hundred and forty eight, by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico ceded California to the United States. In eighteen hundred and fifty, Los Angles was incorporated as a city.

In the ten years between April of nineteen hundred and ninety to April of two thousand, the population of Las Vegas metropolitan area increased by eighty three percent.  Spanish explorers, in eighteen hundred and twenty nine, discovered the area. Las Vegas means “The Meadows” in Spanish. The site was originally a watering place for travellers on their way to southern California. Attracted by its artesian springs, in eighteen hundred and fifty five, it was first settled by Mormons. Two years later, they abandoned their settlement. In eighteen hundred and sixty four, United States Army established Fort Baker there. Las Vegas was detached from the Arizona Territory and joined with Nevada in eighteen hundred and sixty seven. Eventually the town was established. With the arrival of the railroad in nineteen hundred and five, it started to grow. Shortly after nineteen hundred and thirty one, came the shot in the arm. In an effort to lift the state from the Great Depression, Nevada legislature legalized gambling. The growth of the city took off after that. Also aiding the area economically was the construction of nearby Hoover Dam.

To take advantage of the growing fur trade with the Kansa, Osage, Wyandotte and other tribes, French trader Francois Chouteau came from Saint Louis to establish a trading post on the site of present day Kansas City, in eighteen hundred and twenty one, which was the year in which Missouri entered the Union. John Calvin McCoy laid out and developed a settlement called Westport Landing in eighteen hundred and thirty three. The community eventually became the Town of Kansas. In eighteen hundred and fifty, it was incorporated as a city. In eighteen hundred and eighty nine, it was renamed Kansas City. The city’s Native American heritage is reflected in the name. The site of city was within the territory of the Kansa or Kaw Indians. The city was the starting point for gold prospectors and settlers heading westwards, in the middle of eighteen hundred and eighties. Thereby the city grew rapidly in the period. Also contributing to city’s growth were the coming of Missouri-Pacific Railroad in eighteen hundred and sixty five and the spanning of the Missouri River by the Hannibal Bridge in eighteen hundred and sixty nine. Union forces, who occupied Jacksonville four times, destroyed much of the city, during the Civil War. The city was rebuilt. By eighteen hundred and eighties, the city quickly became the transportation hub and leading industrial city in Florida, following the development of its harbour and the railroads. Governments of Jacksonville and the county were consolidated in nineteen hundred and sixty eight.
